Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House – Tickets On Sale!
Published 9 June 2010
It’s one of the highlights of the outdoor film season in London – that’s right, the Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House is back this year with ten nights of cinematic gold. Renowned for its diverse mix of films and features, from ‘special previews to cult classics’ – Film4 will be holding their summer screen in the magnificent Edmond J. Safra courtyard of Somerset House for the 5th year running.
This year’s Film4 Summer Screen programme, which runs from 30th July to 7th August, lacks a family-friendly motion picture and less mainstream and current films than previous Film4 Summer Screens. However, the list of films is still broad enough for most tastes. The ‘Behind the Screens’ series also returns, described by the event organisers as ‘your chance to hear actors, directors and other industry insiders discussing the features playing; offering you a view of the art of moviemaking from the other side of the lens’. Examples are Movie Mix Tapes, a look into the creative decision-making that takes place when forming movie soundtracks; and Dance on Film, a discussion about the challenges presented when representing various dance forms on different screens.
The line-up of films and features for 2010 is as follows:
Friday 30th July – Movie Mix Tapes*/ Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Enter the Dragon
Saturday 31st July – Satirical Cinema*/ Team America World Police and A Town Called Panic
Sunday 1st August – Bright Lights Big City*/Manhattan
Monday 2nd August – All That Glitters is Goldfinger*/Goldfinger
Tuesday 3rd August – BAFTA-winning Short Films*/Black Narcissus
Wednesday 4th August – Kubrick’s Camera*/Paths of Glory
Thursday 5th August – Dance on Film*/Cabaret
Friday 6th August – Celluloid Dreams*/Mulholland Drive
Saturday 7th August – The Immortal Appeal of the Vampire*/Let the Right One In and the Lost Boys
*BTS – Behind the Screen feature
Keep in mind that the Behind the Screen tickets are sold separately to the tickets for the feature film of the day. As always, doors to the venue open at 18:30 on event nights, with DJs playing music from 19:30 and movies starting at 21:15. It’s highly advisable to bring a blanket, rug or cushion to rest your bottoms on and to keep warm in! The Somerset House courtyard has uneven stone paving that will be testing even to the hardest of bottoms. Rugs are available for purchase at the venue. But be warned – chairs and portable furniture, including inflatables – are strictly prohibited. Visitors are invited to picnic in the courtyard of Somerset House before and during the film.
All events have a limited capacity – so book your tickets early to avoid disappointment! Tickets are released for general sale from 9:00am on Thursday, 9th June.
