Lavender Festival in Wandsworth – Sunday 27th June

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, head on over to Lavender Hill via the tube to Clapham Common or Clapham Junction. You will also be able to reach Lavender Hill by overground; please check the Transport for London website for buses running to Clapham Junction or Wimbledon (those are the couple of names I have seen buzzing by me as I walk down to the National Rail).

If you have not had a chance to visit this area in a while, I can tell you that it is fast becoming another hub in London’s busy boroughs. For London standards, this area is quiet with spurts of commotion. Indeed this part of London has been receiving some TLC with new shops springing all over the high street giving it the charm of new and old world.

The eclectic area is a mix of independent-minded stores selling musical instruments, clothes, jewellery, coffee, bakeries, cupcakes, and services like hair salons, masseuses, tailoring, dry cleaning, and restaurants. One restaurant I am looking forward to eating at is Mein Tay – Chow Yun Fat (an international movie star) has his mug up on the window and with endorsements like that, I have to give it a go. While the independent stores are prominent, mainstream high street stores are coming into the foray. Some familiar names already down by this area include: Jamie Oliver’s Recipease, Whole Foods, Sainsbury, and Debenhams, which are just off Falcon Road and St John’s Hill.

On Sunday June 27th, 2010, on the Lavender Hill main street, you will get to enjoy the neighbourhood that may have been missed on the tourist maps. The Lavender Festival will give you a chance to discover this hidden gem. Fun for all ages, the FREE family festival will be filled with “attractions, entertainment and games happening along Lavender Hill, including live music, competitions, loads of fresh food & drink stalls, tombola (lottery tickets drawn from a revolving drum), market stalls, BBQs, cupcakes, face painting, a Punch & Judy show and a collection of farm yard animals.”

Date: Sunday 27th June 2010
Festival Location: Lavender Hill road, Wandsworth, Sw11 (Google Map)
Nearest Tube Station: Clapham Junction (10 minute walk)

Mien Tay indeed is a restaurant that is worthy of it’s good reputation. I was there the other night for their wine launch and I honestly don’t think I ate or drank anything that wasn’t of a high quality…
