Paul Smith, Brook Street’s Newest Resident

Published 1 November 2010

Parallel to the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street you will find Brook Street. Starting at Grosvenor Square and stretching to Hanover Square, famous streets that are home to prestigious boutiques intersect little old Brook Street. South Molton Street ends or starts (depending on which way you look at it) at Brook Street and New Bond Street crosses it.

The street is also the location of the only composer museum in London, the Handel House Museum. Brook Street’s most famous resident, Claridges Hotel, is often the site of a crowd of paparazzi there to capture the hotel’s latest celebrity guest. As of September, Claridges has been home to a different sort of celebrity, a retail celebrity.

Iconic menswear and womenswear designer Paul Smith has opened up shop in the boutique next to the ballroom of the hotel. With entrances from Brook Street and the hotel, the shop stocks womenswear with a selection of gifts for men. Lines from the catwalk can be found in this store as well as shoes and bags. When you walk into the store you can’t help but be drawn to the cabinets on the right hand side of the store which are currently showcasing bags and wallets. The centrepiece of the store is the two-tiered table which along with the pink and white striped wallpaper adds to the sense that you are shopping in a plush Parisian powder room.

It is a reflection of just how far Paul Smith the man and the brand has come that his latest shop has opened just a stone’s throw away from South Molton Street. A location that he looked at back in the late 70’s, when he sought a location for his very first store in London, but could not afford. Instead he opened up shop in, what was at the time, the less desirable Floral Street in Covent Garden.
