Review: Ilia Darlin’s Show at Jalouse, Mayfair
Published 22 February 2011
London Fashion Week is buzzing around fabrics, colour matching and music! A party at Jalouse, an exclusive members club at Mayfair, hosted a celebration for Jean-Pierre Braganza’s collection with a live performance of Ilia Darlin, an Athens-born electro-pop singer. Literally, she has come from the Olympus to strike us all with her thrilling voice and sympathetic lyrics.
The night was set up to celebrate Canadian designer Jean-Pierre Braganza Autumn/Winter Collection 2011 as he debuted on the London Fashion Week catwalk on Friday. However, once Ilia Darlin was on the stage, all eyes were on her.
Sex-appeal aside, Ilia Darlin engaged the audience with her powerful voice. Her sexy dress by Mariaflora showing off her curvy body did the rest!
Despite being a pop singer, Ilia Darlin kick-started the show with ¨Sin”, a strong, melancholic tune, which she sang solely with a piano-backtrack. Her high range voice and volume made it feel like she was singing “a cappella” – it just gave us goosebumps.
The show went on with more energetic, dancing songs – “Hit Me” was one of the audience’s favourites.
Ilia Darlin’s music, which she writes as well as sings, is very firmly in the electro-pop genre. “I want to be able to bring into the mainstream my deeper thought, my own demons, and obsessions”, she said.
She has been dubbed as the “European answer to Lady Gaga”. A fair enough comparison as Gaga and Ilia Darlin sound and look similar. However, scratch beneath the surface, and one finds that Ilia, her songs, and her personality are uniquely hers.
Ilia has managed to combine her studies of classical and contemporary ballet together with her fashion obsession to make who she today. “The way I set up my music, my dancers, my costume… everything has got to do with my way of expression, it is symbolic”.
“Car Crash” is the official first single of her upcoming album debut. The song was recorded in LA as one of a series of tracks made in collaboration with Universal and Konvict Muzik.
Ilia Darlin is definitely a name to watch as her music grows in the London scene!
