Fresh Seafood & Unusual Dining at The Lobster Pot

Tucked away near Kennington Tube Sation is The Lobster Pot, which is a small & cosy French seafood restaurant. While the location is random, the food was anything but, and every seafood dish that came out was consistently top notch.

Apart from its good seafood, The Lobster Pot is a quirky restaurant. From the unassuming entrance, you step into a replica ship, complete with portholes along one wall, and a giant fish tank behind it with real fish swimming around. For those with a squirmy disposition, this could be slightly upsetting, especially if you’re trying to choose from the menu which sea creature to devour and there is a fish staring right at you through the porthole.

Apart from the visual experience of the dining room, the owners have gone one step further by having seagull sounds played throughout the restaurant, and you can’t help but look up once in a while, as though you were at a beachside restaurant rather than a cosy restaurant in Kennington.

The menu itself is rather varied in the seafood options. Apparently all the seafood comes fresh from Billingsgate market. There are the typical lobsters, prawns, and cod, but also some unusual dishes like razor clams. Prices are on the slightly high side, with even the Bouillabaise costing £26.50 for a main course portion. In the end I went for the Bouillabaise, while my dining partner went for a special grill of the day, a combination of different types of seafood like squid, prawns, and a half lobster. We also went for a plate of razor clams to share.

The razor clams starter portion was disappointingly small for the price of £13.50, with only 3 razor clams in total! I was getting worried that we might have chosen an overpriced restaurant at this point. The razor clams were grilled well though, with an interesting breadcrumb and almond seasoning that complemented the saltiness of the clams.

We were relieved when the main courses came that they were of decent size. The bouillabaisse was very rich, with a base that was just heavenly. With lots of different types of fish and seafood in the dish, it was fun discovering the different components, all extremely fresh.
My partner’s dish was a simple grilled selection of seafood, but again cooked well, and really let the natural sweetness of the seafood come through.

Overall, The Lobster Pot serves up amazing seafood, and it is evident that the cook puts in lots of care into his dishes, each one cooked just right. Its slightly on the pricey side for the location, and while the nautical themed visual and sound experience is unique, I’m not quite sure the effect will be as surprisingly pleasant on a second visit. Still, if you’re a big fan of seafood and want to have an interesting night out with some friends or family, The Lobster Pot is definitely a seafood restaurant to consider.
