Freshly made buffalo mozzarella in London at Mozzarella&More
Published 14 April 2013
I would like to stake my claim to be one of the first to call for the start of a new food trend in London – centered on mozzarella! It’s a cheese that’s always been readily available in London, but over the past year, there’s been a renewed focus among London restaurants to really elevate the humble mozzarella to the quality that you get in Italy – and not the stringy chewy stuff on Domino’s pizzas.
It started with Obika, with their freshly flown in mozzarella cheese direct from Italy, to really bring a higher quality than ever before in London. And now, for the last few months, we have had Mozzarella&More in Chelsea, serving fresh buffalo mozzarella, burrata, and ricotta cheese made right here in the UK.
Mozzarella&More is part of the same family of restaurants that includes the legendary Made In Italy, open for more than 20 years, and actually just two doors down the same Kings Road in SW7.
Looking through the menu, the focus is, of course, on the three cheeses above – and they are so good that you’ll be a fool if you went to Mozzarella&More and not had at least a few dishes with these cheeses!
I recommend going for mozzarella as a starter – the best out of the lot is the buffalo mozzarella, burrata, grilled artichokes, and spicy salami as you’ll get to try both of their freshly made cheeses as well as the salami, which has one of the strongest chilli kicks I’ve ever had, and goes really well with the soft tasting mozzarella.
From the meats, their homemade pistachio and fennel sausage doesn’t sound very appealing when you read the menu, but is well recommended and a surprisingly good dish. It’s not really a sausage in the traditional way – it comes without casing, and it’s freshly made on the spot. A mixture of really juicy ground pork with a liberal seasoning of pistachio and fennel. In fact, it’s perfect as a pseudo-starter, for sharing between two.
While Made in Italy two doors down is famous for their authentic pizzas, Mozzarella&More serve some really good pastas. They’re all simply garnished and seasoned, bringing out the real quality of the home-made pasta. Ravioli stuffed with wild mushrooms, ricotta, smoked mozzarella in butter & sage sauce is a case in point. The ravioli itself has so much wonderful flavour that all you need is the clear butter sauce with bit of sage to compliment. Absolutely wonderful.
As they had a big grill at the front of the kitchen, we thought we would give their grilled meats a try – going for the mammoth grilled beef fillet on their daily specials. Served on a bed of rocket, it was grilled expertly, although don’t expect Hawksmoor standards of course.
Make sure you leave space for dessert at Mozzarella &More – the homemade chocolate & ricotta cheesecake will blow your mind. If you never liked cheesecakes because they were too dense and overly sweet, this is the perfect example of how a real cheesecake should be – not too sweet, light and easy to eat at the end of a meal.
Mozzarella&More is the perfect place for a casual lunch or dinner with family or friends – the staff are incredibly friendly, prices are really affordable for the quality of food you get, and you will be hard pressed to find better tasting mozzarella, burrata, and ricotta cheeses in London.
