Sunset Views from the London Eye (Summer Lates Experience)

If you’re a Londoner, chances are that you have tried to avoid at all costs the 500 meter radius around the London Eye on the South Bank. With good reason – in the summer, it is packed with tourists trying to get on the Eye or into the McDonalds next door afterwards.

But you’ll be missing out on the spectacular views from the Eye itself, especially this summer when the weather is hot, the clouds are nowhere in sight, and every building in the capital is bathed in glorious sunshine.

This summer, the London Eye has an evening programme called Summer Lates. Modelled on the successful late night openings that London museums have been running for some time, the London Eye Summer Lates are similar in nature. You can experience a ride on the London Eye at arguably the best time to go up: evening sunsets, for some amazing photos (see below), or after sunset for a night view of London.

I was up last week on invitation from the London Eye, to experience their Summer Cocktail Experience. While every other capsule was packed with tourists snapping pictures left, right, and centre, our capsule took on the air of a floating bar, complete with nibbles and two freshly made cocktails each. People were laughing and enjoying the views, as should be when you’re 135 meters up in the air with a stunning sunset over London. And it went round for two rotations (one hour in total), meaning that if you missed the view from one side of the capsule the first time round, you had another chance to catch it!

Some pictures, from what I think might have been the best sunset this summer:

Apart from the London Eye Cocktail Experience, there is a Wine & Tapas Experience, where you get some tapas nibbles and a glass of Spanish wine instead. Then there is the duo ride ticket combo – the London Eye Day & Night ticket, so that you can go up the London Eye during the day, and again during sunset or after sunset in the evening.

So there you go. You can book either the Cocktail Experience of the Wine & Tapas Experience until the 22nd August, every Friday & Saturday night. So not many opportunities left! See here for more information on the London Eye Summer Lates.
