John Kenny’s Sub-Saharan Journeys

The first time I heard about John Kenny happened when I visited the Capital Culture’s Gallery in Covent Garden back in the early summer of 2009. His then exhibition ‘Portraits from Africa’ stuck in my memory. Even though he states that he has not received an art or photography education, his works are striking.

Hotel Medea – An Unusual Overnight Play On A Boat

Hotel Medea defies categorization. The work incorporates performance art, dance, theatre and audience participation to create a bizarre and surreal journey through the ancient myth of Jason and The Golden Fleece. And all on a ship, and in the middle of the night too.

1001 Inventions Exhibition at the Science Museum

The 1001 Inventions is a free, family friendly interactive exhibition which showcased at the Science Museum from January to the end of June. It leads us – the exhibition goers – through a journey of scientific, social and technological advancements made between the 7th and 17th centuries across the Islamic Empire in order to illustrate that the so-called Dark Ages were really a “Golden Age” – a period of illumination in terms of science and knowledge.

Review: Penn & Teller at the Hammersmith Apollo

Most people have seen fire eating, pieces of material cut and magically rejoined and implausible feats of memorisation. All three of these featured during Penn and Teller’s run at the Hammersmith Apollo, which concluded the weekend that just passed. ricks and illusions are executed seamlessly with rich storytelling, verve and passionate criticism, in addition to scepticism of the magic and supernatural professions.

The Secret Garden Party – Music Festival At Its Most Decadent?

If you haven’t heard of the Secret Garden Party before, don’t worry, you’re not the only one! This small festival taking place in fields at Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire will never rival its bigger rivals in the summer music festival genre, but it tries not to anyways. However, does it sound all too hippie with its community and run free and wild spirit?

Review: Ellie Goulding Gig at The Indigo2

Ellie Goulding has only been on the music scene for a couple of years now, but you wouldn’t have guessed it from her recent performance at Indigo2. After being thrust into the limelight post-BBC’s Sound of 2010 and BRIT award wins, Ellie topped the UK album chart with her debut album, ‘Lights’. In this age of all hype and no substance, could Ellie pull off a performance worthy of all the excitement?

Review: Sister Act Musical at The London Palladium

Knowing Whoopi Goldberg’s interpretation of Deloris Van Cartier in the 1990s’ American comedy film, I had high expectations of actress Patina Miller as the Deloris of The London Palladium’s Sister Act, which opened in May 2007. Ms Miller’s performance and amazing voice alone would have been enough to fill a whole-night show, but the theatre lined up a pretty impressive supporting cast to accompany her.

Review: Aftermath at the Old Vic Theatre

The Old Vic takes its theatre underground with Aftermath, a production exposing the repercussions of the Iraq war on its citizens, performed in the evocative tunnels under Waterloo station. Aftermath runs until the 17th July, and is not to be missed!

New Designer Exhibition 2010 Showcases The Future

Have you ever wondered who the faces are behind some of the products we relish, use every day, or complain about? To be honest, I don’t very often, but a recent exhibition of graduate new designers and their work has definitely served to open my eyes.

Tibet Film Festival 2010 in London

The Tibet Film Festival has arrived again in London for the third year running. Although in a city like London one can easily watch a play written by a Nigerian writer on one day, and the following day can get a glimpse into Argentinean music if one wishes so; it does not happen very often that we have the chance to experience a comprehensive picture about Tibet, its culture and the people’s struggle during the last few decades.
