Circle Line extended to Hammersmith from December

One of the biggest changes to the London Tube network will be taking place on the 13th December 2009, when the Circle Line stops being a circle and instead adopts of a “teacup” structure. Circle Line trains will run to Hammersmith station, using the same tracks as the Hammersmith & City Line. Read more about this change and what it means for you!

Heathrow Airport Voted Worst in the World… Again

Heathrow Airport has, again, been voted the worst airport in the world by members of the Priority Pass program. In its annual survey, the London airport has picked up the unflattering accolade for the second year running, despite the opening of the brand new Heathrow Terminal Five and repeated statements from the British Airport Authority on the huge amounts of investment into the airport.

Harrods Starts Selling Gold Bars

In a move that could only be pulled off by one of the world’s most famous department stores, Harrods of Knightsbridge has started to sell gold bars, ingots, and coins from its new Harrods Bank located in-store. The Mohamed Fayed owned store was eager to satisfy an emerging but rapidly growing demand from its wealthy customers for a way to profit from the boom in gold prices worldwide. The price of gold had recently topped a high of $1072 per ounce, and shows no sign of stopping its rapid upward trajectory.

Crowd-Free Oxford Street with Virtual NearLondon

NearLondon are launching a new website in November just in time for Christmas. The website is a virtual world that fully replicates Oxford Street, Regent Street, Leicester Square, and Bond Street. Most of the big high street shops have signed up to the scheme, which means that you can be taking a leisurely stroll down a virtual Oxford Street and see the exact same shops that you will normally see in real life.

The Evening Standard becomes a freesheet

In a big news for London commuters today, The Evening Standard has announced that it will be a free newspaper (a.k.a freesheet) from the 12th October. The owner, Alexander Lebedev, is confident that the move to free will more than double the current circulation of 250,000 copies a day to more than 600,000 copies a day.

This news comes only weeks after The London Paper, a free newspaper, was retired.

In an aggressive marketing push, Starbucks is now offering free wi-fi at all its 650+ branches in the UK to holders of its customer loyalty program, the Starbucks Reward Card.

The best thing of all is that the card is free from ANY Starbucks store; all you have to do is to load the card with an initial £5.00 and register the card online, and you can log-on for free wifi as long as you are inside a Starbucks store!
